Club visit to Chicksands
On Thursday May22, 2014 SADARS made a visit to the Military
Intelligence Museum and Intelligence Corps Collection at
Chicksands.
Twenty one of us in 10 cars met on time at 10am for a 10.30
start to go through the border control checks which we had to
comply with a few weeks before.
We were met by Joyce the Archivist and Sally Ann the Curator,
both ex-service personnel who knew what they were talking about
and were very interesting. We were split into two groups. We saw
of course various SOE (Special Operation Executive) radios and
spy equipment.
The main display (the Medmenham Collection) devoted to aerial
photography and image analysis was of intelligence photography
methods and it was most interesting to see how they achieved 3D
imagery without 3D cameras and how these were interpreted. There
were many photos of everything in use.
The use of Pigeons in communications was also demonstrated by an
ex Wing Commander and his wife (names forgotten!) but obviously
they had first hand knowledge and explained things very well.
This was a most interesting and very worthwhile visit and I have
been told by club members how much they enjoyed it.
I think we stayed for about 2 hours and were then escorted back
to the outside world by Sally just before the heavens opened.
I have sent our thanks to the Museum for the very good,
interesting display and their hospitality.
