Alex M0SFR -2010 QRP DX-pedition to
the Great Barrier Island, 21-23 May
Updated - May 2010
ZL/M0SFR
IOTA OC-201, Locator RF73rq
I will be QRV on the Great Barrier Island off the coast
of New Zealand from 21 to 23 May running 5 Watts into a
proper GP antenna with 12 radials in a great HF location.
I will operate as much as I can but certainly in the
periods when the long path on 30 and/or 20m is supposed to
be open to the UK and the rest of Europe. To compensate
for the low power, I shall be using JT65 and Olivia 16/250
and will respond in this mode to any CW or SSB call I can
hear. I will run a 5W WSPR beacon from time to time (watch
the WSPR database for my call sign).
This will be a great chance to popularise the weak signal
modes, so please give it a go if you can. A special QSL
card from the Island will be sent to everyone confirming
the QSO directly to my home QTH.
I will also try to work CW QRP on 40m into South America,
VK and Asia using my full size 40m GP when the conditions
on the higher HF bands are not good.
SCHEDULE for EUROPE/UK
The prediction shows that the 20m path to Europe/UK will
be open around 7 and 19 hours Zulu. I will be transmitting
around 14076.50 Khz. I will be QRV Thr morning, Fri, Sat
and Sun morning/evening.
minutes 0-5 : WSPR beacon 14096.5 You will hopefully see
me on the WSPR map on the Web under my home callsign M0SFR
but with the locator RF73 and will be able to assess the
S/N ratio and get a good idea whether or not the
conditions are good enough.
minutes 5-25 : JT65A calling CQ and answering calls.
If the conditions are poor I will remain in this mode till
the end of the hour.
minutes 25-50: Olivia 8/125, will transmit on 14076.50
+/- QRM
If the conditions are good, I could try Olivia 8/250.
minutes 50-59: CW
Please spot me on the DX cluster if you can!
JT65A spots should be placed on http://jt65.w6cqz.org
Olivia spots I guess should go to the general DX cluster
Allow me to draw your attention to the
unique opportunity to try QRP EME on 70 cm SSB (I know, it
is unbelievable) running 100W into a small 12db Yagi (a
kind that you could make in one evening from parts in your
junk box). What makes it possible is that Joe Taylor K1JT,
the famous Nobel-Prize-winning ham known for his
weak-signal digital modes, has managed to gain access to a
small radio telescope (only 1000ft in diameter) for three
days, and, well, since the damn thing has a tiny
gain of 60db (yes it is 10^6, I did not mistype), we all
get a chance to have a go at EME (i.e.
moonbouncing) QRP (less than 1 KW into an antenna
array smaller than the size of President Bush's
Texas ranch). More

Alex M0SFR - Micro DXpedition
Updated - September 2009
I am going to be QRV in Italy as I5/M0SFR
running my usual 6W into a makeshift wire antenna. This is
meant to be like a micro DXpedition mainly for fun but
partly for self-training.
The dates are Saturday to Friday, 26 of
September to 2 October.
The mode is CW or mixed (you on SSB). I solemnly promise
to send as slowly as you want me to. Just ask QRS any
time. And remember that your 12WPM is absolutely fine for
me, it don't need to be no faster.
My frequencies: 7.030 +/- QRM and 10.108, i.e. the
standard QRP calling frequencies of the 40M and 30M bands.
I shall be calling CQ SADARS, first on 30M then on 40M as
conditions on the band deteriorate. I will call on 7.090
from time to time in case anyone wishes to try a mixed
mode QSO.
I plan to be QRV most days from 22:00z but may be free at
21:00z depending on XYL's plans (she is the boss).
Now to make it more interesting, here is a little contest
for you:
Each day that you establish a contact with me counts as
one point for one band, or two points for both bands.
Whoever gets the most points will also receive a bottle of
Italian wine from me with a commemorative QSL card and if
nobody ever manages to contact me then the bottle will go
to the next raffle. In the unlikely event that there is a
tie between two or more contenders, we will toss a coin.
See you on the bands!
